Bellmans to auction remaining paintings from the collection of Colin Hunter

Bellmans Auctioneers is pleased to offer for sale the remains of the noted collection of renowned art collector Mr Colin Hunter, which will make up forty lots in the January Antiques and Interiors sale. They will go under the hammer on Wednesday 22nd January 2014 at 2pm.

Colin Hunter began to collect English drawings in the early 1960's, in particular drawings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which he bought from a number of major twentieth century collections. Through his enthusiasm and knowledge, lost drawings and indeed whole oevres of artists both well-known and obscure have been rediscovered and reassessed, so that our understanding of the development of British art has been significantly enriched. Hunter’s collection was on view to friends and family at his home on the Thames at Hampton until he sold his principal works at Sothebys London, 11th July 1991, in a dedicated sale.

The collection includes lot 407, ‘Portrait of Winston Churchill’ by John Michael Wright (c.1623-1700), coloured chalks with touches of ink, 24cm x 19.5cm (illustrated below). This work is a study for a painting in the collection of Bleinham Palace, which features Winston and his sister Arabella.
