Oil painting of Chantry Mill, Storrington, to be auctioned this January at Bellmans

This January, Bellmans Auctioneers have a little local flavour for sale -lot 1150, an English Provincial School view of Chantry Mill, in Storrington, provides prospective purchasers with the opportunity to invest in a piece of local history. The 19th century oil painting is being sold as part of Bellmans monthly paintings auction, and will carry an auction estimate of £500-800 when it goes under the hammer after 2pm on Wednesday 21st January.

The Grade II listed classic water mill house of Chantry Mill nestles on the doorstep of the beautiful South Downs, and is believed to date back to the 16th century. Privately consigned by a local vendor, lot 1150 is both delicate and charming as a representation, and the copied images accompanying it provide a fascinating insight into the development of the mill estate.

Created around the original mill pond which had its mill in working use until the 19th century, Chantry Mill has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration, although Bellmans paintings specialist James Gadd comments that it is “both rare and interesting to see a period view of such a notable local residence”.

The entire Bellmans sale is on view from midday on Friday 16th January until the morning of the sale, and is fully illustrated online from Thursday 15th January. Online bidding is available via the-saleroom.com. For more information and to register your interest, please contact Bellmans Auctioneers direct on 01403 700858.
