Richard Willson Cartoons Sell for £20,000 at Bellmans Auctioneers

This September Bellmans Auctioneers, Wisborough Green, West Sussex auctioned a collection of nearly 300 original cartoons, produced by the prominent and celebrated cartoonist Richard Willson which sold for £20,000. The cartoons were sold online via the-saleroom.com from Thursday 5th – Friday 13th September. The collection comprised of pen and ink cartoons of a political and corporate nature, produced for notable newspapers and magazines such as The Times and The Ecologist.

The Timed Sale saw steady bidding throughout the week, however by 9pm on Friday the 13 th , bidders took to their computers in pursuit of purchasing one of these unique cartoons. The sale captures the current interest in political humour, with sale prices reaching £460. Sale highlights include; lot 3039 ‘ The Weakest Link’ depicting Gordon Brown, Geoff Hoon, John Prescott, David Blunkett, Jack Straw and Nick Brown which realised £340 ( Illustrated ). American political cartoons also found their price selling for in excess of £320.

Jonathan Pratt, Managing Director of Bellmans Auctioneers, comments: ‘I am extremely pleased with the result of the sale, especially as this artist has no proven track record at auction and we were offering such a large collection. I was nervous about running the sale entirely online, however, it proved to be the perfect arena for this type of collectable.’
