We are thrilled, and slightly terrified with a collection of works by the great Cosmic Horror author, Howard Phillips Lovecraft.
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937) is one of the most influential figures in 20th century speculative fiction, a writer whose unsettling imagination reshaped the boundaries of horror and science fiction.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft lived most of his life in relative obscurity, publishing mainly in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales. Yet his work would go on to define an entire genre: cosmic horror - the belief that human existence is insignificant within a vast, indifferent universe.
Rather than relying on traditional monsters or gore, Lovecraft built fear through atmosphere and philosophy. His stories explore the terror of the unknown and humanity’s fragility when confronted with forces beyond comprehension. Central to this mythos are beings like Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep, and the Great Old Ones, ancient entities that lurk at the edges of reality.
These creations, combined with his archaic prose and sense of creeping dread, have influenced countless writers and filmmakers from Stephen King to Guillermo del Toro.
Although Lovecraft achieved little commercial success in his lifetime, his legacy expanded posthumously through a network of devoted readers and writers who built upon his fictional universe. Today, his influence extends far beyond literature into film, video games, art, and popular culture.
Lovecraft’s enduring appeal lies in his unsettling vision: that beneath the surface of ordinary life lies an unknowable cosmos, vast and uncaring. It’s a philosophy that continues to fascinate and disturb, reminding us that the most profound horror often comes not from what we know, but from what we cannot ever fully understand.
Coming up for auction in our Printed Books, Maps and Manuscripts auction on Wednesday 3rd December, the collection includes an exceptionally rare edition of The Shunned House, often described as ‘The Holy Grail’ of Lovecraft’s work.
